Popis: Planktonic stage is critical for survival, dispersal, and recruitment of marine shore fishes. As provide the most accurate estimates of daily growth, otolith has been used as a useful tool for studying larval dispersal and growth, and has been applied to several coral reef fish species. However, the early life history of Amphiprion ocelaris, the tropical clownfish, is not well studied. In this study, we investigated the otolith microstructure of the false clownfish A. ocellaris and validated the daily increment deposition in laboratory reared embryos and larvae stained with Alizarin Red S. A. ocellaris formed clear otolith increments during the embryo and early larval stage, with a pattern corresponding to physiological and ecological events and transitions. These findings are expected to be applied to estimate post settlement growth rates, age determination, distribution and population structure of wild clownfishes, and other damselfishes at early life.
