Basic research work is in progress at this institute on the strength of metals which includes research on dislocation phenomena, making use of electron microscopy and x-ray diffraction, and on the strength of acicular crystals with near-theoretic strength. An attempt was made to correlate strength and fine structure of alloys, paying special attention to the effects of diffusion. These studies indicated that addition of Mo lowers the surface energy of alloys. lt was established that under elevated pressures new phases may be formed in metallic systems, providing a method for changing the kinetics of phase transformations. New steels have been developed with yield strengths exceeding 50 kg/ mm/sup 2/; the new formulations also made it possible to achieve considerable savings in the Ni consumption during the fabrication of quality steels. Change of mechanical properties after irradiation in a reactor was studied; results indicate that the effects of radiation may cause a change in the orderliness of the system, this might be of great importance for developing alloys for use in radiation fields. The newly developed analytical methods include neutron diffraction which allows the preparation of neutronograms of single and polycrystalline materials in a magnetic field, and specialized activation analysis.
