This chapter provides an introduction to inclusive growth. It lays out the key striking facts on rising inequality and widespread disparities. The concept of inclusive growth is defined and compared with alternative measures of economic activity and well-being. Then, alternative measures of poverty, inequality, and other indicators of well-being are explained. Inclusive growth is multi-dimensional and requires a comprehensive and integrated framework to link all of the strands. Therefore, the chapter provides an Inclusive Growth Framework that can serve as the basis for analysis and policy design. It spans private sector inputs, government policies, and disparities in outcomes. The final section of the chapter uses the framework as a road map to the rest of the chapters in the book, explaining how they fit together. |
