Male C57B1 mice were used to study the movement of labeled cells into the Malpighian layers after radiation injury. The relationship between mitotic cells in the basal layer and the cells which had moved into the maturation layers was also examined. In the irradiated, chemically protected mouse tongues, the labeled cells in the Malpighian layers were in large groups on the fifth postirradiation day. These groups occurred between clusters of basal cells in mitosis. Consistently, there were no clusters of basal cells in mitosis nor groups of labeled cells in the maturation layers in the irradiated, nonprotected mouse tongues. |
