The purpose of this work is to improve breast cancer treatment methods, specifically lumpectomy followed by partial breast radiation. The focus of this project is the development of a post-lumpectomy spacer system capable of subcutaneous positioning. In selected patients partial breast radiation is the most effective method of radiation for lumpectomy patients. A first iteration spacer system was developed in which, while waiting for pathology results, a spacer balloon is inserted into the breast to maintain the location of the previously excised tumor. The first iteration spacer system extends to the exterior through an open incision. This requires high levels of antibiotics and may produce discomfort. The proposed redesign corrects the limitations of the first iteration design by adding an internal check valve, cuttable catheter tubing, and the ability to cap the tubing inside the breast. |
