Following The Misfits, her divorce, and a subsequent breakdown, Monroe reassessed her career goals. After a failed attempted to play Sadie Thompson in a televised Rain, she reluctantly returned to Fox. The film next film would be a comedy with the somewhat ominous title Something’s Got to Give, to be directed by George Cukor. Monroe rejected scripts right and left, and by the time production started in the spring of 1962, she was beset by ongoing illness. Although she looked spectacular, she missed many shooting days and delivered an uneven performance. Fox was especially displeased when she left the shoot to go to New York to sing “Happy Birthday” to President Kennedy. Finally, she was fired. A few months later, with plans in the works to resume production, she would be dead. |
