Growth and characterization of Sarcosine single crystal for nonlinear optical applications

Popis: An NLO material expected to have following promising properties such as large NLO susceptibility, low dielectric constant, wide optical transparency, large laser damage threshold, favourable crystal growth conditions and easier in device fabrications.. Single crystals of organic nonlinear optical material of Sarcosine (SAR) was grown by adopting slow evaporation method. The sample had been subjected to powder X-ray diffraction to identify the crystalline nature and the prominent peaks were indexed. The crystal belongs to the orthorhombic system with a space group P212121. The vibrational modes of each functional group had been evidently assigned using both FTIR and FT-Raman vibrational studies. The UV-Vis-NIR optical transmittance study was carried out for the grown crystal which possess good transmittance in the visible region with the minimum cut-off wavelength of 208 nm. Thermal analysis determined that the material is stable up to 210°C. The second harmonic conversion efficiency was determined using Kurtz-Perry powder technique and the efficiency was found to be 1.4 times greater than that of standard KDP.
