Popis: | Some samples of starved yeast incubated at 37 C at a pH below 5 and with glucose as substrate show a considerable decrease in oxygen consumption when inorganic phosphate is added. This depression can be prevented by addition of tetraiodothyropropionic or tetraiodothyrobutyric acids. Thyroxine or triiodothyronine do not show this effect, nor do the formic and acetic acid analogs. Starvation of the yeast includes washing cell suspensions in water. This process seems to remove substances which are important in maintaining the yeast, since addition of the supernate can also prevent the failure of respiration. |
