Popis: Among novel pharmacological strategies aiming at reducing deficits or enhancing repair following CNS injury, the application of monosialoganglioside GM1 is today of considerable interest. Several evidences indicate that exogenous gangliosides appear to be an effective pharmacological approach in the treatment of various types of brain damage, not only traumatic or toxic, but also following experimentally-induced cerebral ischemia. Ganglioside treatments reduce the extent of secondary-induced neuronal degeneration at early post-lesion stages and improve long-term outcome following CNS insults. Evidences supporting these ganglioside effects and their potential therapeutical use in the acute phase following cerebral ischemia will be discussed in the present chapter.
