Popis: | Gestational diabetes mellitus complicates 6–7% of pregnancies in the USA and increases affected women's risk of developing Type 2 diabetes. Women with diabetes or other medical problems require special attention for reproductive health issues. Women with prediabetes and diabetes are special populations when considering pregnancy risks, postpartum contraception and lifelong health risks. Contraceptive methods differ in composition, mechanisms of action, effectiveness, side-effect profiles, noncontraceptive benefits and safety with specific medical conditions. Hormonal contraceptives do not negatively affect glucose or lipid metabolism in healthy users. While most contraceptives are believed safe in women with gestational diabetes, additional research is necessary to evaluate for glycemic effects. The current review describes clinical considerations for contraceptive care in women with gestational diabetes. |
