The goals and current status of the US Air Force nickel-hydrogen (Ni-H/sub 2/) battery cell life test program is described. The objectives of this testing are to develop a comprehensive database supporting the application of Ni-H/sub 2/ cells in low earth orbit (LEO) and to support their application in medium altitude (MAO) and geosynchronous (GEO) orbits as well. More than 200 individual pressure vessel (IPV) design cells are to be included in the test and represent all four domestic vendors of the Air Force design cell. Both 3.5 in and 4.5 in diameter cell sizes are represented in the test. The authors discuss the acceptance and characterization testing of the 3.5 in diameter 50 Ah nameplate capacity cells. > |
