Black Wattle trees (Acacia mearnsii) were introduced by missionaries into the then Machakos district around 1928. The then Machakos district where the black wattle trees were introduced has only very recently been administratively subdivided into the current Machakos, Kitui, Mwingi and Makueni districts. By the 1950‘s a large number of families were growing wattle trees for fuel wood and for structural purposes. In the late 1950’s, a cotton ginnery was converted into a wattle bark shredding, compressing and baling factory. |
