Waters in temperate latitudes generally show marked seasonality in phytoplankton crop, production and composition. Only in coastal waters, however, is it possible to sample intensively or long enough to assess the extent to which the seasonal cycle varies from year to year. But because of the efects of runoff, tidal mixing, and geography on the vertical and horizontal stability of the water column it seems likely that phytoplankton crop and production arc more variable, and show more patchiness, in coastal waters, and especially in fjords, than in the open sea. The seasonal cycle might thus be relatively indistinct in fjords. The aim of this paper is to resolve spatial and temporal variability in sea-loch phytoplankton biomass into several components so as to begin to understand which processes in phytoplankton ecology can be modelled deterministically and which must be treated stochastically. |
