The humane use of the common marmoset in research requires the exercise of good surgical technique and a knowledge of the essential disciplines of anesthesia and analgesia. In this chapter, the challenges of anesthesia, surgery, and perioperative care in this diminutive nonhuman primate species are discussed. The choice of agents is presented in the context of the duration and invasiveness of the procedure, physiologic support of the animal, and appropriate postoperative monitoring and care. Also described are indications and approaches for common emergency, elective, and investigational surgery. Tables provide doses for agents currently in use. |
