III. Arthography of the Shoulder

Popis: The use of arthrography in the diagnosis of injuries to the shoulder joint was first suggested by Codman (1934) who stated that he was unable to obtain any useful diagnostic results. Oberholtzer (1938) subsequently claimed, not very convincingly, to have demonstrated the capsular lesion in dislocation of the shoulder. At many different times attempts have been made to standardise a technique, but the difficulties of performance and diagnostic interpretation have proved a considerable deterrent. The method, however, has only been fully developed in Stockholm, first by Lindblom and Palmer (1939), and more recently by Oliver Axen (1941). The only mention of this subject in the British literature is by Withers (1948), and I should like to quote from this:— “In establishing the diagnosis” that is between complete and incomplete rupture of the supraspinatus, he says “there is a place for arthrography”, and claims to do this by injecting radio-opaque medium into the subdeltoid bursa. “It can then be demonstrated...
