Popis: Recognition of autism has increased significantly over recent years as evidenced by steadily rising referrals for assessment and a rise in media interest. Autism has historically been considered a disability, but a more complex and nuanced understanding is now emerging that recognises the struggles and strengths that come with it. There are higher rates of mental health conditions in individuals on the ‘autistic spectrum’, so a clinical psychologist is likely to work with autistic people whatever specialism they practice in. This chapter aims to give an overview of what a clinical psychologist needs to consider when working with autistic people. This chapter primarily covers autism in adults who do not also have a global intellectual (learning) disability. However, many of the issues discussed will also be relevant for children on the spectrum.
