In order to understand the surrounding social world and give it a sensible meaning individuals are equipped with different strategies. Some of them do not even require conscious awareness. For instance, relying on embedded cues enables individuals to reduce the number of potential interpretations without deliberate thinking (Bless et al., 2010). One relevant cue that individuals obtain from observing their environment is the distance between entities. The perceived distance is a valuable information in order to draw the relevant inferences. The most basic conclusion the perceived distance allows, is whether, e.g., an object next to a person might rather be positive or negative. We assume that objects that are perceived as being close to an individual are evaluated more positively than rather distant objects. |
