For the therapy of squamous cell carcinomas of the head and neck area several cytostatics have been used to date, which were administered either systemically or by intravenous injection or infusion. In order to improve the therapeutic range of these drugs, several possibilities of regionalizing the treatment of these tumors were tested. For this purpose, intra-arterial chemotherapy was introduced for bleomycin, among other drugs, by Huntington et al. (1973), Bertino et al. (1973), Bitter (1973), and Holtje et al. (1974). The hypothetical goal of this regional type of therapy is to bind more of the active substance in the tumor region than is normal after systemic administration, thereby increasing the cytostatic effect on the tumor while decreasing the systemic-toxic side effects. |
