Popis: Analytic wariness towards apophaticism is diagnosed as issuing from a picture of language, referentialism, according to which reference is the primary and fundamentally explanatory function of language. I show how referentialism sits uncomfortably with apophaticism, before going on to argue that referentialism is not compulsory, gesturing towards pragmatist and inferentialist alternatives.
