Neutral receptors for anions have been recently reported by several research groups.1 The primary inspiration for our acetate receptor came from a study by Etter and coworkers, who discovered that diarylurea derivatives with electron withdrawing groups in the meta positions were exceptionally good at forming 1:1 crystalline complexes with hydrogen bond acceptors.2 Isomeric derivatives with ortho or para substituents did not form such co-crystals. This “meta effect” was attributed to a substituent induced intramolecular C-HiO hydrogen bonding interaction between the carbonyl oxygen and the acidified ortho hydrogens. Such an intramolecular interaction was postulated to weaken the hydrogen bond accepting ability of the urea carbonyl. |
