The angular distribution and the energies of the fission fragments, emitted in the bombardment of a thin gold foil by 160 MeV oxygen nuclei, have been experimentally determined by the use of a proportional counter detector. By a comparison with the theory of Halpern and Strutinski an estimate has been made of the shape of the fissioning nucleus at the saddle point. The total kinetic energy released was determined to be 150 MeV. It is claimed that the fissioning nucleus has typically a mass of 204 mass units. The possibility of the emission of charged particles, as well as neutrons, in some of the evaporation chains preceding fission, is discussed. A fission cross section of 1.8±0.2 b was obtained. |
