Uncooled operation of laser diodes is desired because it eliminates the need for thermoelectric coolers, which contribute to poor reliability in packaged fiber-optic transmitters. There have been reports of lasers operating uncooled at high temperatures at 0.98 /spl mu/m, 1.3 /spl mu/m, and 1.5 /spl mu/m. Despite these reports of device operation, there has not been a report of a complete fiber-optic link operating uncooled at high temperatures. In this paper, we present a 1 /spl mu/m wavelength fiber-optic transmitter as well as a receiver operating uncooled at temperatures exceeding 125/spl deg/C at bit error rates (EER) of 10/sup -11/. |
