The dental patient with intellectual and/or developmental disabilities will present numerous challenges in communication, diagnosis and treatment. For a variety of reasons, these individuals often are unable to find or access needed dental care, often leading to increased incidence and severity of dental disease as well as loss of teeth and the many problems associated with edentulism. The presence of dental disease has also been shown to have a direct impact on the person’s overall systemic health, making dental care a critical component health care. |
