In the central High Atlas, two stockworks can be distinguished: A basement that was part of a Variscan belt and a cover composed of Mesozoic and Palaeogene sediments accompanied with magmatites. The deformation of the cover was dominated by a fractural pattern within the basement, which was repeatedly reactivated from the Triassic onward, while the continental stress-field gradually changed its orientation. Contrary to the western High Atlas, where the deformation was predominantly caused by vertical movements, compressional structures are more frequent in the central High Atlas. Here, the amount of shortening increases continuously to the east from 7% to 20%. In its northeastern part, compressional deformation is, moreover, indicated by axial plane foliation. |
