This chapter opens with the Iran-Contra scandal, which tarnished the Reagan administration when it broke in October 1986, and provided Carter with some of the details about the October Surprise that had possibly cost him the election of 1980. The chapter shows that by then, Carter was more interested in his travels to the Middle East and the Soviet Union in quest of peace. He and Rosalynn fell into a serious disagreement about a book they wrote together, Everything to Gain: How to Live the Rest of Your Life, and their lives were saddened by the deaths of Billy in 1988 and Gloria in 1990, both victims of pancreatic cancer. Nevertheless, they observed elections in Panama and Nicaragua, and witnessed the creation of the Rosalynn Carter Institute for Caregivers in Americus, Georgia. |
