Allergy against many substances may be caused by multiple sensitizations against different allergens. However, a patient is often sensitized by one kind of allergen, especially pollen, and in the course of time reveals symptoms when coming into contact with material of quite another origin. For example, weed sensitized patients react to spices [1–6], bird serum allergic individuals do not tolerate eggs either as food or as part of a vaccine, birch pollen allergies have clinical symptoms when eating apples or nuts [2]. This “cross-reactivity of allergens” is well known and such patients have to be aware of possible additional allergens in their environment. Such cross-reactivities can be demonstrated in vitro by the RAST inhibition method [3, 4] |
