This chapter explores the application of blockchain for supporting a messaging infrastructure within local electricity grids. Since communication is paramount in the optimization of the information flows, core concepts are introduced on established, as well as emerging blockchain-based protocols for communication in smart grids (SGs). A concrete initiative is presented, where a blockchain-enabled energy community trades locally produced renewable energy. The chapter presents also a discussion on benefits (e.g., transparency, immutability, data provenance) and challenges (e.g., economic feasibility/costs, privacy, scalability) in using the blockchain technology as a communication medium in SGs. Finally, overall conclusions and future research lines are presented. |
