Popis: This chapter reviews basic concepts and standard techniques used to survey and monitor vertebrate populations. The methods reviewed do not use thermal imaging during the data acquisition phase of the animal counts. We distinguish between methods used to acquire estimates of population or abundance and those used to gain information about population or abundance trends (indices). The concepts of accuracy, precision, and bias and their relationships to detectability are discussed. Complete and incomplete counting techniques are explored and examples of each are highlighted in the review of past work. The emphasis of the reviews is focused on past aerial survey efforts from both fixed wing and helicopter platforms. The benefits of aerial photographic techniques and the importance of snow cover are also addressed.
