Popis: | We propose a compact and ultra high sensitive refractive index (RI) sensor based on modal interference in an integrated optic waveguide with a metal under-cladding (MUC). It has been shown that the MUC significantly increases the fractional modal power in the ambient medium, affecting the higher order modes much more compared to the lower ones. This results in an ultrahigh dependence of the modal interference on the ambient RI change. The RI sensitivity of the proposed sensor structure is found to vary in the range 5.28–71.94 μm/RIU, for the RI range 1.33–1.37, which is the highest reported RI sensitivity, achieved in modal interference based sensors till date. |
