Popis: This report summarizes the data recovery efforts at LA 172689 and LA 173359, two historic-aged sites located on Cannon Air Force Base (CAFB) in Curry County, New Mexico. This work was performed in advance of the proposed Chavez Manor Military Family Housing undertaking and in response to an unexpected discovery at the Consolidated Communications Facility construction site. Site LA 172689 is an historic homestead located immediately west of State Road 311 and north of Highway 60/84, within the CAFB cantonment area. The site was initially documented as part of a larger survey project associated with the proposed housing development plan. Site LA 172689 was recommended as eligible for inclusion in the National Register of Historic Places (NRHP) in May of 2012 under both Criteria A and D. Concurrence by the NM SHPO was provided on June 11, 2012. Site LA 173359 was inadvertently exposed during mechanical excavation at the Consolidated Communications Facility construction site and was recommended eligible for inclusion in the NRHP under Criteria Din July 2012 and concurred upon by NM SHPO in September of 2012 . The data recovery process carried out at LA 173359 targeted Feature 1, one of two linear latrine trench defined during the excavation process. The second trench parallels Feature 1 in dimension and orientation, and is also interpreted as a latrine, most likely associated with late WWII Air Force military training activities at the base.
