The design of rotary mirror scanners is a complex process involving many trade-offs. This paper explores these issues emphasizing how the design can be optimized for a particular application. Examples range from thermal imagers to prepress equipment, and the trade-offs covered include scan accuracy vs cost, efficiency vs performance. The topics covered include polygons, motors, bearings and housings. The configuration of these parts and their interactions are considered. Particular emphasis is placed on reducing the power consumption of the scanner through careful consideration of windage - the drag on the polygon due to its movement through the surrounding gas.
