Popis: The ability to image the dynamic electrical activity inside the brain tissues has profound implications for the understanding of cognition. This capability has been severely limited because of the difficulty in estimating these time-dependent volumetric fields from electroencephalography (EEG) data acquired on the surface of the skull. In this work we present the first method capable of accomplishing this with a high level of statistical evidence. The method employs a novel theory for brain wave propagation to reconstruct and map the fast-varying electric field distributions within the brain with high spatial and temporal resolution. The method is demonstrated in application to a condition of significant scientific and social importance, autism spectrum disorder (ASD), for which spatially resolved frequency dependent cognitive net- work anomalies are revealed.
