This chapter looks closely at the need to build relationships in order to work together, respectfully, as a team. The two authors discuss in detail the classroom process that they used in 1984 in a bilingual classroom at Shepherdson College, Galiwin’ku, Elcho Island, North East Arnhem Land and the elements that made it so successful both for the students as well as for the teachers themselves. How a good bilingual classroom will strengthen a student’s understanding and ability to work in both languages of instruction by really working from what the student understands and can do. The authors consider what made them and the students feel empowered in that classroom. The second author then relates it to the work she is doing today and reflects on what could be improved for students in the future. |
