Popis: The term ‘blood-brain barrier’ originated with the observation that trypan blue and other dyes failed to enter the brain compartment after intravenous injection (Goldmann, 1913). Since trypan blue and some other dye molecules are protein-bound, the blood-brain barrier was primarily defined as a ‘protein barrier’. In the late 1960’s, the use of various hemeproteins and some other markers, which could be made visible under the electron microscope demonstrated that the barrier within the brain to molecules of 1,800 daltons and above was the endothelium of cerebral capillaries (Reese and Karnovsky, 1967).
