Popis: In diagnosing a condition on the basis of culture one must consider when such a diagnosis is appropriate, how to collect the material necessary for analysis, and how to interpret the results. Accuracy parameters, i.e. sensitivity and specificity, are of importance, as is the role of culture diagnosis in comparison with other diagnostic techniques. The benefits of diagnosing by culture are that it can (1) define a specific cause and point to a specific treatment, (2) provide information that is relevant to the selection of therapy, such as antibiotic choice and dosage, (3) relate disease processes epidemiologically to specific causes, and (4) help prevent recurrence by implicating a source of infection.
