NMR study of four-membered rings. VII. Preferential axial orientation of groups in 3-substituted thietane-1,1-dioxides

Popis: Proton nuclear resonance spectra of 3-substituted thietane-1,l-dioxides have been analyzed at 300 and 100 MHz and the results compared with those obtained in solid phase by X-ray investigation. Evidence has been given for a slight puckering of the thietane ring and the preferred axial orientation of the substituents in the liquid and solid phase. The NMR measurements in the range between −135 and +150°C indicate an increase in the population of the less stable equatoriaily substituted isomer with increasing temperature. The internal rotational angles calculated from coupling constant values were compared with those determined from X-ray analysis.
