IN STUDIES of emergency feeding, continuing those reported previously by the author (Platt, 1944), three pens of White Leghorn pullets hatched March 5, 1943 were subjected to a change for six days, starting January 8, 1944, from the regular feeding schedule of dry mash and grain ad libitum. In one group the mash was removed and grain fed ad libitum; in another the grain feeding was discontinued and mash fed ad libitum; and in the third group the mash was discontinued and a mixture of sprouted soybeans and minerals fed as a substitute. At the end of six days, normal feeding was resumed in all pens. The sprouted soybeans were produced by first soaking beans of the Black Wilson variety for 24 hours in warm water, then spreading them on trays kept at room temperature for four additional days, during which they were immersed in water for approximately 15 minutes . . . |
