Popis: This chapter focuses on the application of lesser used alkaloids (perhaps due to their physiological properties) in asymmetric applications in synthetic organic chemistry. These alkaloids include (−)-brucine, (−)-sparteine, (−)-strychnine, and (−)-nicotine. In many of the applications, these alkaloids have been functionalized to have the proper reactivity for use as catalytic ligands in asymmetric synthesis. The reactions and processes described in this chapter include the aldol addition reaction, the nitroaldol (Henry) reaction, the Friedel–Crafts reaction, and cycloaddition reactions. Carbolithiations are also described in this chapter as well as an example strychnine-based enantiodifferentiation coupling agent.
