Popis: Searching for a Middle Kingdom site, and keen to determine the southern penetration of his Nubian “C Group” culture, Reisner embarked on an excavation reconnaissance trip to the Sudan. Learning of irrigation projects threatening the site of Kerma by the Third Cataract, he changed his plans to focus exclusively on this site, which, despite evidence of an indigenous culture, he interpreted as an Egyptian outpost that took on local burial customs. The statue of the Egyptian elite lady Sennuwy was found (by assistant Louis C. West) in tumulus K III. Back at Giza, Reisner found many of the now famous “reserve heads” in disturbed contexts at the bottom of several mastaba burial shafts. Dows Dunham joined the expedition in 1914. Reisner took a survey camel expedition with just a few companions from Kerma to Wadi Halfa and then visited Sir Henry Wellcome at Gebel Moya, solving several of his archaeological problems.
