Automated fixture design systems (AFD) are indispensable tools of flexible manufacturing systems. Verification of workholding plans is investigated in this paper using a finite element analysis procedure (FEA). Point-to-point gap elements are used to model the contact between the fixturing tools and the workpiece. First for the sake of validation, two different approaches to model workpiece-fixture interaction are compared in a parametric study. Then in three case studies of increasing complexity, the flexibility of fixturing tools is taken into account with locators modelled as beam elements. The effect of friction between the clamps and the workpiece on rigid body stability and deflection are investigated. The efficiency of the fixturing plans using FEA results is discussed. |
