Popis: Summary Volvulus of the sigmoid colon is the second most common cause for obstruction of the large bowel, should be considered in every case of large bowel obstruction. The roentgenographic findings of a large loop of bowel rising out of the pelvis with only moderate distention of the rest of the colon on the flat plate are pathognomonic of the disease. Accurate diagnosis is necessary to avoid the fatal error of treatment by proximal decompression. Operative treatment is recommended for all but critically ill patients who cannot tolerate celiotomy. Because of the high incidence of recurrence, resection of the sigmoid is ultimately necessary. The mortality can be reduced if the disease is recognized, the proper treatment instituted without delay.
