Chapter 5 concludes with a consideration of practices to help us fear better. It begins with three approaches to support fearers in gaining awareness of practices of compelling fears and controlling threats: mindfulness, somatic regulation, and politicized somatics. The chapter builds on these practices to chart alternative modes of fearing together. It suggests the importance of staying with fearers: forming relationships within which fear can be received, instead of ones that contribute to the sense that fears must be acted on or avoided. These relationships are not without complications, and the responsibilities that issue from them are not without caveats. Our priority should be not preventing fears themselves but preventing the (sometimes fatally) dangerous actions that can come from an inability to cope with such fears. The chapter concludes by considering the potential role for practices of fearing better in current crises (e.g., COVID-19 pandemic) and future contexts of crisis. |
