Popis: The 2018 Fourth National Climate Assessment1 and the 2014 Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) Fifth Assessment Reports2 describe the dramatic changes projected to result from climate change, highlighting the need not only to reduce greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions but also to adapt to the consequences of climate change. Adaptation strategies prepare a community to be resilient in the face of unavoidable climate change impacts. Climate impacts—such as extreme heat events, sea-level rise, changes in precipitation patterns, ocean acidification, and altered wind and storm patterns—can have a variety of secondary impacts on community conditions ranging from human health and safety to economics to ecosystem integrity. Developing strategies to address these impacts relies on the development of a vulnerability assessment that not only provides an assessment of the projected impacts for a specific community but also includes an evaluation of how the impacts may affect the community and how ready a community is to address them. This information is critical to the identification and prioritization of adaptation strategies (see chapter 7).
