How do online Christian communities engage with socio-political issues in Malaysia? This question is asked within the context of the Malaysian media environment, where Christian representation in mainstream media is limited even when there are prominent issues affecting Christians. This chapter looks at some of the ways that Christian individuals and groups have attempted to engage with the national discourse and political narratives with online platforms. The main case study featured in this chapter is a Facebook group consisting of Malaysian Christian intellectuals, whose extensive interactions within group on Malaysian politics led to the publication of a book about Christians and democracy in Malaysia. The interactions within the group, coupled with tangible outcomes, serves as a discussion point of whether social media can impact national socio-political discourses beyond the online realm. |
