We use Google Trends data to predict the election results of the general German election in 2009, 2013, 2017 and try to predict the upcoming election results in September 2021. We calculate the Google proportion of Google Trends data, which is the search interest for a term in relation to other terms of interest. We apply on this Google proportion different weighting methods, utilizing previous election results and opinion polls to account for probable distortions that come along with Google Trends data. |
