Popis: From 1953 to 1956, this author had the privilege of performing postgraduate research work in the Acoustics Group at Imperial College. Under the enlightened guidance of Dr. R. W. B. Stephens, this group worked on a wide range of topics, and it was therefore not to surprising to find oneself conducting a scaled‐down model experiment in basic seismology. This fortunate circumstance led to a stimulating career in seismic exploration for oil, the development of which is naturally dependent on basic acoustic‐wave propagation concepts. This paper will be concerned with some of these simple concepts which are particularly significant to exploration and will indicate the degree of sophistication to which they have been developed with the recent aid of large‐scale digital computers.
