Empirical determination of the scalar polarizability α in the 6S → 7S transition in cesium

Popis:	We have measured the lifetime τ 7S and the static polarizability α 7S of the 7S state of cesium; these quantities yield an approximate empirical determination of the scalar polarizability α, important in the 6S → 7S parity violation experiments. We find τ 7S = 53.6(1.2) ns, α 7S = 6673(386) a 0 3 , yielding α = −270(5) a 0 3 , in good agreement with the theoretical prediction.
