Popis: | The physical and chemical characteristics of NAPL (nonaqueous phase liquid) source zones in the subsurface present substantial challenges to the representativeness of soil samples collected for the purpose of characterizing the NAPL source. The principal challenge to representativeness arises from the extreme small-scale spatial variation in contaminant concentrations expected in most NAPL source zones. This challenge can be overcome for characterization of small-scale properties of the source zone by careful selection of sampling locations based on soil stratigraphy and field screening, and for larger-scale properties of the source zone by the collection and analysis of large-quantity soil samples and composite samples. |
