Popis: Apoptosis plays an important role in both physiological and pathological processes. Apoptosis occurs during both normal embryonal development and homeostasis in multicellular organisms, and possibly in the prevention of neoplastic transformation. In addition, derangement or failure of apoptosis may be involved in the pathogenesis of a number of human diseases including cancer. Recent research has begun to elucidate the molecular mechanism underlying the initiation and manifestation of the apoptotic process. It is now widely accepted that apoptotic cells are killed via a highly ordered and controlled program. In brief, extracellular and intracellular signals activate a signal transduction cascade involving proteases, ultimately resulting in the activation of DNA endonucleases that cleave chromosomal DNA into fragments.
