Popis: | Brockington and Associates, Inc. conducted an intensive archaeological survey of 1,801.2 hectares of the Charleston Naval Weapons Station (CNWS) in April 1999 - July 2000. Approximately 1,156 hectares of the CNWS remain to be surveyed when the present surveyed lands are combined with lands examined during previous investigations (1,123.6 hectares) and lands that are developed or disturbed (1,413.4 hectares). Examination of these lands should follow procedures outlined by Whitley (2001) and employed during the present survey. Archaeologists identified or revisited 24 archaeological sites and 38 isolated finds during the present investigations. The identified sites and isolated finds include portions of four eighteenth-twentieth century plantation settlements (Liberty Hall, Melgrove, and Prioleau's- including several brick kilns, and one undetermined), scattered late nineteenth- early twentieth century occupations, and Pre-Contact Native American camps and activity areas from the Ceramic Late Archaic through the Late Mississippian periods. The identified components are similar to those encountered by previous investigations at the CNWS. One of the sites (38BK1706) is eligible for the National Register of Historic Places (NRHP). We recommend 10 of the 24 sites (38BKI708, 38BK1714, 38BK1832, 38BK1836, 38BK1840, 38BK1841, 38BK1844, 38BK1845, 38BK1846, and 38BK1849) potentially eligible for the NRHP. We recommend the remaining 13 sites (38BKI831, 38BK1833, 38BK1834, 38BK1835, 38BK1837, 38BK1838, 38BK1839, 38BK1842, 38BK1843, 38BK1847, 38BK1848, 38BK1866, and 38BK1867) and 38 isolated finds not eligible for the NRHP. NRHP eligible site 38BK1706 should be protected from ground disturbing activities and nominated to the NRHP as per Section 110 of the National Historic Preservation Act of 1966 (as amended). The 10 NRHP potentially eligible sites should be protected from ground disturbing activities until their NRHP status has been determined through additional testing. The 13 sites and 38 isolated finds recommended not eligible for the NRHP require no further management consideration other than documentation of their locations in the event that activities on CNWS encounter artifacts near these locales. Included in the appendix is the 2001 report, "Archaeological Probabilistic Modeling of the Charleston Naval Weapons Station, Berkeley and Charleston Counties, South Carolina," by Thomas G. Whitley. |
